What was said about the Topcon Machine Control 3D Systems
"The two Topcon Machine Control systems I purchased improved my production immediately, by at least 30-40%, on my very first project. The equipment freed up my key personnel to spend their time managing the project and achieves a higher level of accuracy than our traditional methods all the while simplifying operations. An added bonus is that it in turn saved my clients a considerable amount of survey & engineering costs."

“The Topcon GMS-2 a valuable tool to assist municipalities with Tangible Capital Assets (TCA) as well as Municipal Infrastructure Management Systems (MIMS) initiative effective for 2009.
The GMS-2 is intuitive and the unit is ruggedly designed delivering accurate results. We have found the accompanying TopPad software especially useful having shapefiles be exchanged between our GIS system and the GMS-2 in a seamless manner.
LMS has provided us with an affordable solution as well as quick and courteous service…Highly recommended”.

What were the main reasons for purchasing Topcon Equipment?
The main reason we got into Machine Control is because it is becoming a standard method for building roads and site works and we do not want to be left behind, plus the fact that I am the main surveyor and I am tired of pounding stakes.
We purchased Topcon equipment because of their competitive pricing, support network, and reputation for quality and innovative technical advances, such as the first to use Glonass satellites, laser augmented mm GPS, and now smoother high speed dozer control.
How did your Topcon Equipment contribute to the success of your project/application?
Machine Control has allowed us to increase production along with less material overrun. We can calculate accurate quantities using the same surface models that are used to guide the equipment.
Can you indicate the extent to which your Topcon Equipment improved specific productivity gains, or measurable improvement in quality of work?
With Machine Control on our excavator we removed preload, cut ditches, and sub graded for a new road in one pass, the excavator cut a little high allowing our D6 on Machine Control to fine tune the sub grade right behind the excavator. After compacting, our grader on Machine Control spread sub base and base gravels. Using a GPS Rover we spray painted lines on the base gravel for paving limits.
Basically we built the whole road without a stake. The delay caused by having to complete one activity before laying out and starting the next activity was eliminated.
It is easier to maintain a consistent grade because you always know where you are at and not guessing or eyeballing a stake 10 meters away.
What would you say are the main benefits that your company has gained by purchasing Topcon Equipment?
Machine Control has allowed us to do more work with the same amount of people and equipment. We have come to rely on Machine Control for everything from steep slope contouring to sediment ponds to typical road building to utility trenches to a small parking lot to a Water Treatment Plant.
Can you describe your experience regarding ease of use with the Topcon Equipment and what you think of the reliability of the product?
Machine control has taken a lot of stress off operators by letting them know where they are at all times without having to reference to a stake or boning rod. The screen has grade indicators, along with plan, profile, and sectional views. Every line you see on the paper plan can be downloaded and seen on the screen with options to turn them on or off.
Seeing I come from a surveying background, we make all our alignments and surfaces along with site localization for the jobs. These are activities that can be hired out. Surface models and alignments can be made by reputable businesses specializing in this from around the world and sent with the click of a computer mouse. Site localization should be set-up by someone experienced with GPS surveying that knows the many things that can go wrong.
When we first started there were 15 to 30 minute spells when there were not enough satellites in view to get a fix, since then there has been at least eight more satellites launched which has kept us working the whole day through.
Except for two faulty sensors that were replaced and calibrated within two days most of our Machine Control equipment has been running day after day going on three years.
Please describe how you feel about the entire sales experience and level of support that you experienced with this equipment purchase from Land Measurement Systems Inc.
I have found sales to be very straightforward and support to be excellent. If they do not have answers to my questions immediately, they get back to me promptly.
The bottom line as I see it is the cost of Machine Control weighed against production gain. Every year that goes by with the equipment still working this balance falls more in favour with Machine Control. If the machine wears out that it is on, it is easy to move it to a new one.
I think Machine Control is GREAT

“It saves me a lot of time. I just set up the GPS in the morning and put the (machine-control) box in the grader, and my operator is off working on his own all day. If we had done this with regular survey methods, we would have a stake in every three meters. And working around all those stakes not only wastes a lot of time, but can be a huge nightmare.”

“Topcon Machine Control increases productivity thru reduced staking and less passes to get to grade. The team at LMS made the integration of this technology easy within our company.”
